For commuters driving along I-35 in Norman, the Lindsey Street Bridge is the entry point into the University of Oklahoma’s main campus in Norman, OK. For this gateway bridge, CDR took as inspiration the prominent classic Cherokee Gothic architecture and brick work prevalent on one of the state’s oldest colleges. The bridge will be a warm reddish brown with a contemporary faux brick pattern, which will be cast into concrete and stained to look like real brick stacked together with mortar.

[readmore]

Tying together all of these elements is the bridge girder painted a red to complement the brick. Decorative quoins provide solid stone edging for the exterior side of the parapet. The quoining design to be cast using form liners will give the illusion of real cut stone on the parapet. The quoining design also breaks up the expansive brick pattern along the MSE wall using a Fibonacci spacing, contributing to the overall Cherokee Gothic style. A custom railing was designed for the bridge the design of which mirrors the arched lintels found throughout the University and in columns and cast-stone arches. Centered on the parapet and bracketed by two cast concrete columns with brick and quoin design, will be a concrete panel, cast front and back with a bas-relief image of the Seed Sower, David Ross Boyd, the first president of the university and a symbol of the University’s dedication to education and growth. On the bridge deck, CDR designed a respite area/pedestrian facility for commuters traveling to and from the university. The design pays homage to the university’s start as an agricultural college. Furrowed row design is scored into the concrete sidewalk, representing Oklahoma’s planted fields. Two different tall grass bas relief patterns are cast into the seating walls, which references both the indigenous vegetation but also the state’s Dust Bowl years, when they learned that the native grass was essential to enriching and rooting the soil. Facing Lindsey Street framed by two small, faux brick and quoin columns will be cast text reading, “City of Norman.” The Lindsey Street Bridge is part of an eight bridge Aesthetic Master Design Plan CDR developed for the I-35 Corridor in Norman, Oklahoma. The design for each bridge finds its inspiration in either the history, architectural, flora or fauna, or the industry of this region.

    • Requirements & Techniques.
      • We crafted the form-liners so that the dynamic action depicted in CDR’s design was accurately represented and that the intricate details would be visible to travelers on the interstate driving at speeds of 65 mph.
      • Creative Form Liners incorporates many processes to create the custom decorative patterns that are used to cast our elastomeric/urethane-rubber form liners. This sculptural relief relied on our expert traditional sculpting techniques, which sets us apart in the field.
      • The custom decorative pattern for this bas-relief was first hand sculpted at a maximum 1 ½” relief by our team of artisans, ensuring that all aspects of the relief would register exactly.
      • Once the custom MSE-wall form liners were fabricated from the patterns, the MSE-concrete panels were used by the precast concrete form-liner company, Reinforced Earth Company.
      • Creative Form Liners fabricated the MSE-wall form liners for the diagonal six-inch fluted-rib textured pattern that spans the MSE walls and frames the Land Run Medallions. These decorative concrete wall forms represent the flexibility that using modular form liners offers by allowing designer(s) the opportunity to configure concrete patterns to create dynamic and site-specific designs.

    • Year of Completion. 2011
    • Project Impact. Rock Creek Road bridge at I-35 links west side with east in the City of Norman, providing motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists a convenient and safe way to cross the highway. • Features & Design Context.  The aesthetics for the Rock Creek Road Bridge were designed to illustrate the City of Norman’s active equestrian industry and the western trade of saddle making, an art form that has a fabled history in the city. Native American blanket designs are imprinted into the concrete surfaces of the slope walls and stained in various colors.
    • Techniques & Requirements.
      • Custom form liners were also used to create the weave pattern seen on the pier columns.
      • The elegant stamped concrete slope walls were achieved using Creative Form Liners’ custom urethane-rubber stamps.
      • Once stamped by the contractor and cured, the blanket designs were then stained by Creative Form Liners’ decorative staining experts to imitate the colors of a woven blanket and handcrafted leather.
      • All of the decorative concrete form liners that CFL made for this project are cast using reusable urethane, which enables the local Department of Transportation and the City to reuse them on different projects as they see fit.

    • Testimonials.
      • “CFL’s creativity flows from the information gathered into something tangible. Their craft is defined by “problem solving”, making many components and considerations fit into the given parameters (time, space and budget). To be able to work within those boundaries, and do it well, is a true talent” Debby Williams, Director (Oklahoma Art in Public Places)
      • “We have received many positive comments from the public concerning the decoration of our new bridge structures in the Oklahoma City area, and much if not all of that credit needs to be forwarded to CFL.” Gary Ridley, Secretary of Transportation (Oklahoma Department of Transportation).

    • Features & Design Context. This used our state-of-the-art form liners to emblazon the bridge with the emblem from the Oklahoma state flag. The design elements are strong and colorful, not reliant on intricate details that would be lost to most drivers. The pier provides support and a continuation of the weave design, a shield featuring the Native American iconography. Slope walls under the bridge complement the main elements with a red stamped concrete design reminiscent of Native American weave patterns.
    • Techniques & Requirements. Our durable urethane-rubber liners were used to cast the repeating woven band and jewel pattern along the parapets and piers. Our detailed high-relief fiberglass form liners were used to cast the central shield and wing walls depicting local ledge stone and the flag emblem. Our craftsmen also did the expert specialty staining in earthen browns, reds, blues, and beiges that further enhance the local-stone effect. Even with only a two-inch relief, this crisp pattern is visible from a great distance.

    • Project Impact. This striking vehicular and pedestrian bridge that marks the entranceway between Washington, D.C., and Prince George’s County celebrates Maryland’s state tree, the White Oak.

    [readmore]

    • Features & Design Context.  The bridge includes two 150-foot cast-in-place parapet walls and two six-foot cast-in-place concrete columns. These columns, featuring the leaf of the White Oak in two-inch raised relief, are capped with White Oak acorns of heroic size.
    • Techniques & Requirements.
      • Fabricated a urethane rubber form liner reinforced in a fiberglass shell for the column.  Made in 2-3 pieces, the fiberglass shell was constructed in a way to enable the contractor to form against it and cast the columns in place with little difficulty. Also made the acorn cap form liner that the contractor used to precast the two caps prior to mounting them on each column.
      • The interior faces of the parapet walls were created using urethane rubber simulated-stone form liners.
      • Urethane rubber form liners were made to re-create the designer’s continuous leaf pattern on the inside of the entryway and parapet walls.
